Like Mother, Like Son

I'm crazy un-photogenic.  I'm not saying this to get complements. I'm going to prove it (pictures below),  in order to get one decent photo, we take lots of crappie ones.  My digital trash can is full of awkward photos.  And Henry, poor sweet Henry, has my gift for poor photo taking.  Don't get me wrong.  That kid is cute and takes some adorable photos but he also has my gift for poor timing and weird faces.  We just cracked up when we downloaded the photos from a little mini-photo shoot.  Below are the funnest (yes, I'm posting awful photos of myself).  Henry and I both making similar goofy faces   The same poor timing and goofy grins. His left eye even closes more than his right, just like mine.  This often makes me look like I am winking in photos, but not in a cute way.

I think one of the oddest things about having children is seeing yourself in them. It is strange to look at this tiny person and see your lips and eyes.  I remember cradling Henry as a new born and running my fingers over his little lips.  He had the same sweet heart shaped lips as me. It is a surreal feeling.  While I have spent countless hours gazing at Alex's perfect little features, he looks nothing like me.  Not even a little.  But, back to Henry.  He favors me. A lot. Like, I kind of feel bad for a little boy who looks so much like his mom.  I imagine that when he is an awkward pre-teen he isn't going to be a fan of people saying 'you like just like you rmom.'  And, I have a feeling his teenage years might be a little more awkward, given by my ability to look like a goober in photos.

Side note:  In target awhile back, Henry wanted the most hideous pair of light up superhero shoes.  I told him no way.  When he asked why,b I said "because you would look like a giant goober."  For the rest of our time in the store he walked around crying 'but I want to be a goober mommy!"

Now, when he isn't channeling my goofiness he is oozing all kinds of adorable.

The suitcase he is sitting on is a prop from his infant photo shoot.  We have the photo hanging in the house and Henry loves to look at it and talk about it.

When I grabbed this suitcase for the boys to set on, Henry immediately insisted that he "sit in it like I did when I was a baby!"  Obviously, he has gotten a little too big.  Also, my camera and photo skills are way lacking next to my friend Cassie who took the above photo.  But, seeing this side by side, it is hilarious.   Seriously, that kid has grown up so much in the three and 1/2 years that we've had him. What!?, my baby is pushing four!?

Anyone else take bad photos?  Is it just me, or does anyone else want to smack those people in the face who consistently take amazing photos? What?  Am I not supposed to admit that?  Oh, come on I can't be the only one who has beautiful photogenic friends that I am jealous of ; ).

PS.  I've been updating my Etsy shop!  I'm going to post a few new paintings on the blog tomorrow.  Super excited about where my work is going.  Getting ready for a show is awesome.  It is forcing me to paint. At first I was totally stuck but I think I am finding my groove.  So fun!

P.P.S.  I also made into some etsy treasures!  It you are like me and don't know what that means, I'll save you the need to google.  It is were etsy members create collections of items based on the theme.  A shopping guide of sorts.  Super excited to be included.  You can view the collections here, here and here.  Lots of fun stuff to check out.

  1. I enjoyed your post. I'm not photogenic either. When I want to make a profile picture of myself, I do my own photos so I can cherry-pick through the awkward ones to chose the best ones to post of myself. But when other people take pictures of me and post them places? I've lost track of the times I've cried "oh no!" at seeing them. I am also a master of poor timing and goofy faces.

  2. Oh, I've had other people post super weird photos of me online! And, I'll admit to un-tagging myself on more than one occasion ;). Thanks for reading!

  3. Found you on the Etsy blog team! Had to stop by when you mentioned taking weird pictures. I do, too! Or at least I'm highly self-critical and only like a few that I take, haha. I have a knack for weird faces, too, and sometimes they just don't work as well in a picture as they do in life.

    1. Sometimes I try to combat my bad photo skills by attempting to make funny faces. That usually comes out worse! Like, I look totally insane! :) Thanks for stopping by!
